Nicky & Nevin | Wharerata Function Centre Wedding

Summer 2019

Our first Manawatu wedding to be involved with (my home town woop woop!). With a stunning Astra Bridal dress that Nicky managed to choose in half an hour (unheard of !?!?), they had a relaxed special day at the beautiful Wharerata Function Centre. Check out their little piece of magic, filled with thoughtful details, fun and heartfelt moments

Our love story began

In 2015, first year of Bible College, Nevin apparently experienced love at first sight and vowed to himself he would marry me, however, it took him 3 years to convinced me to date him! Throughout this time we became great friends which has been an amazing foundation to our marriage.

Tell us about the proposal…

I was moving down to a friend’s house in Palmerston North where he was based, however two days before the move he surprised visited me at my parents house in Morrinsville! He had planned a sweet proposal with a hidden photographer (one of our Bible college pals) up on the top of Wairere falls just down the road from us. However, on that day it was pouring with rain. To make it worse for him, I tried to be cute and took him to Cambridge (which he had never been to yet) without telling him where we were going, seeing as he surpised me I thought it was my turn now. All through our trip to Cambridge he kept trying to secretly find a great opportunity/spot but could not. At that point he had almost given up, but knew he had to do it some time that day as my parents were expecting it! On our way out of Cambridge he saw the entrance to Te Koutu Lake Domain and made me turn the car around to go for a walk. While it was spitting a bit, we went for a nice stroll through the park, with many dogs, a family of ducklings and lots of other people, until we came to a nice secluded spot where he took his chance and proposed! He still blames me to this day for all the stress I put him under.

What were your highlights for the day?

A massive highlight was the afternoon break we had post photo-shoot and before the reception, we have almost 2 hours of rest time where we could just sit in the shade together and share stories of our morning and special moments so far of our day! This was originally scheduled into the day and I would so highly recommend it! Especially summer weddings, having alone time off our feet to just enjoy the afternoon breeze. Our reception was also so low key that although it had its formalities, for a lot of the time our guests had the freedom to venture outside in the gardens to enjoy the cool evening and sunset. This was a special time being outside and walking around with friends, and family and just enjoy each other instead of being stuck inside to a tight schedule.

We splurged on...

Definitely the photographer. It was so worth it.  David Le was absolutely amazing, he was so secretive, I honestly didn't notice him pretty much the whole time, and the photos he captured of the day were absolutely stunning. I was so glad we splurged on this, especially seeing as this is how we will remember the day the most!

Where did you find your inspiration for your wedding day?

A lot from Pinterest, Instagram and websites that I found with lots of ideas e.g. paper and lace which was my fave!

We saved on...

The decorations/flowers, we had some wonderful friends from Church decorate our venue with their gardens and wedding stick from previous weddings. Also I DIY’d a lot of things with help from my family.

Do you have any tips for other brides and grooms?
